NEW YORK RANGERS POST-GAME NOTES
November 20, 2010 – New York Rangers 5, Minnesota Wild 2 (Game No. 21, Away No. 10)
* The Rangers defeated the Minnesota Wild, 5-2, tonight at the Xcel Energy Center to improve to 11-9-1 overall, including a 7-3-0 mark on the road. The win marks head coach John Tortorella‘s 300th career NHL coaching victory, becoming the 40th coach in league history to reach the milestone.
* New York improved to 5-0-0 in the second game of back-to-back sets this season, including a 4-0-0 mark on the road, and have out-scored their opponents, 16-5, in the five wins. The Rangers are now 14-2-2 in the second game of back-to-back sets over the last two seasons (9-1-1 on the road), after posting a record of 9-2-2 in the back-end of back-to-backs in 2009-10.
* The Blueshirts are 4-0-0 on Saturday’s this season.
* Martin Biron stopped 26 shots to improve to 4-2-0 on the season, with a 2-0-0 mark on the road. He has held opponents to two or fewer goals in five of his six starts this season.
* Ten different players tallied at least one point for the Rangers. Dan Girardi led the Blueshirts with two points, registering one power play assist and recording the primary assist on the game-winning goal, and was credited with a team-high, six hits and three blocked shots in 24:34 of ice time. Girardi, who skated in his 300th career NHL game last night at Colorado, has now tallied six assists in the last nine games.
* Marian Gaborik recorded an assist on the game-winning goal, and registered four shots on goal while making his first career appearance vs. the Wild. Gaborik is Minnesota’s franchise leader in several major offensive categories, having registered 219 goals and 218 assists for 437 points in eight seasons (2000-01 – 2008-09) with the Wild.
* After a scoreless opening frame, Artem Anisimov opened the game’s scoring at 8:50 of the second period. Anisimov has now recorded eight points (four goals, four assists) in the last 11 games.
* Defenseman Michael Del Zotto gave the Rangers a two-goal lead with a power play tally at 14:24 of the middle frame. Four of his six points this season have been registered on the power play.
* Alex Frolov notched the Blueshirts’ third goal of the second period with the eventual game-winner at 19:00 of the middle frame.
* Brandon Dubinsky tallied New York’s fourth straight goal with an unassisted tally at 4:53 of the third period. Entering tonight’s contest, Dubinsky was tied for fifth in the NHL with 11 goals, and he has now recorded 15 points (nine goals, six assists) in the last 16 games.
* Ruslan Fedotenko registered the Rangers’ fifth goal of the contest, unassisted at 14:08 of the third period, and was credited with five hits. Fedotenko has recorded six points (three goals, three assists) in the last six games.
* Rookie Derek Stepan, and defensemen Matt Gilroy and Michael Sauer each recorded an assist for the Rangers. Stepan registered the primary assist on Del Zotto’s power play goal, and has now tallied five points (one goal, four assists) in the last five games. Gilroy registered the primary assist on Anisimov’s goal at 8:50 of the second period and posted a plus-two rating, and has tallied three assists and a plus-five rating in the last five games. Sauer also recorded an assist on Anisimov’s goal, and tied for the game-high with three blocked shots.
* The Rangers’ penalty kill held the Wild scoreless in four power play opportunities (6:22) and has now yielded just one goal in their last nine games, registering a 96.6% success rate (28-29) over the span.
* After an off-day tomorrow, the Rangers will return to action to face-off against the Calgary Flames on Monday, Nov. 22, at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m.), to close out a three-game stretch vs. Northwest Division opponents.
