GREENVILLE GAMEPLAN: DULL THE STINGERS

Ray SchmittBY: Ray Schmitt, Voice of the Greenville Road Warriors

The Greenville Road Warriors head to the Low-Country tonight for a South Division showdown with the South Carolina Stingrays. It’s the first of three games in as many days for the Road Warriors.

The Road Warriors (36-21-4, 76 pts.) visit South Carolina (33-17-11, 77 pts.) today for the 11th of 16 meetings between the clubs this season. Fans can follow the action by watching America One or listening at Greenvilleroadwarriors.com. The Road Warriors are 8-2-0 against the Stingrays this season and 17-10-0 all-time in their history against South Carolina. The Road Warriors have won each of the last two games in the Battle of the Palmetto State including their last trip to North Charleston on February 7. Tonight’s game is the second of seven between the Road Warriors and Stingrays in the month of March. Four of the seven are in North Charleston where the Road Warriors have won twice in four tries.

Who: Greenville Road Warriors at South Carolina Stingrays
What: Away Game #31, Season Game #62
When: 7:05 p.m.
Where: North Charleston Coliseum, 5001 Coliseum Dr., North Charleston, SC 29418

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Road Warriors are averaging three goals per game since leading scorer Marc-Olivier Vallerand was called up to Rockford of the AHL. In two of the three games they’ve scored fewer than three.
  • Greenville holds the league’s best road power play at 26.6 percent. It is 7-for-22 (32%) in its last five road games. Road Warriors are 3-for-13 at SC this season with all three coming on 3/2/12.
  • The Road Warriors’ magic number to clinch a Kelly Cup Playoffs berth is 13. Any combination of the 9th place team losing standings points and the Road Warriors gaining points will shrink the number.
  • Greenville has the 2nd most penalty minutes, 1,090, in the Eastern Conference while SC has the 4th fewest at 860.
  • Defenseman Jyri Niemi has six goals in his last eight games, two of which were game winners. He is fourth among league defensemen with three game winners for the season.
