RABBITS TAILS
The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (15-11-2-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, host their second game of the week, welcoming the Jacksonville Icemen (6-15-2-2) to the Bon Secours Wellness Arena tonight at 7 p.m. Greenville seeks a bounce-back performance after falling last night to South Carolina, while the Icemen come to Greenville on the high of winning last night in Jacksonville. The Icemen scored three third period goals to overtake Atlanta. Greenville was denied a second consecutive victory and was held to only one goal for just the fourth time this season. The Swamp Rabbits have bested the Icemen twice this season. The new South Division rivalry will see the teams meet 10 times during the 2017-18 campaign.
EVAN-TUALLY
Swamp Rabbits forward Evan Jasper tallied Greenville’s only goal of last night, earning his eighth marker of the season. The rookie forward has earned eight points (4G, 4A) in the last five games. The Whitby, Ontario native has recorded 20 points (8G, 12A) in 23 games this season to lead the Swamp Rabbits first-year skaters. Jasper tallied a pair of goals against the Icemen in their last meeting, notching the first game-winning goal of his career in the process. The winger’s power play tally was also the first of his career.
TIME TO MAN-UP
The Swamp Rabbits power play has connected on a few goals in the last three games. The man advantage unit is 3-for-8 in the last three games after being held off the scoreboard for three straight contests. The Swamp Rabbits power play is third in the ECHL this season, converting on over 20% of its chances.
JACK FROST
Forward Jack Nevins has produced some consistent offense for Greenville in December. The physical forward has tallied seven points (4G, 3A) in nine games this month. Nevins’ last goal came on Saturday in Jacksonville to put Greenville on the board. The Stittsville, Ontario native is finding more chances to score as well. The 6-foot-2 winger has taken 25 shots in the last nine games, as opposed to the first 19 games this year where he averaged one shot per game.
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
The Swamp Rabbits have been able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities against the Icemen this season. Greenville has recorded a combined nine goals on 42 shots against Jacksonville in the first two meetings. Greenville’s shooting percentage against the Icemen is over 21% this season.
A LOT CAN CHANGE IN A WEEK
The Icemen have seen an exchange of seven players in the last five days. Earlier this week, Jacksonville acquired the ECHL rights to defenseman Tim Daly from the Norfolk Admirals in exchange for Chase Harrison. Daly earned nine points (1G, 8A) in 21 games as the alternate captain for the Admirals. Last season, the blueliner was the top contributor on defense for Utah, earning 38 points (10G, 28A) in 59 games. Alexandre Goulet and Ryan Graham each left the Icemen to join Canadian collegiate programs. To fill the void, the Icemen signed forward Eli Lichtenwald from Pensacola (SPHL), acquired forward Garrett Klotz from Quad City, and also had Bobby MacIntyre return from an AHL call-up with Cleveland.
CARROT BITES
- Branden Troock leads the Swamp Rabbits and the ECHL with 33 points (14G, 19A).
- Greenville defenseman Joe Houk is fourth among all blue-liners with 22 points (7G, 15A).
- Goaltender Branden Halverson has made the fifth most saves in the ECHL this season (501).
- The Icemen’s top five scorers are all rookies, who have combined for 76 points (28G, 48A).
- Jacksonville has played only two games outside the state of Florida since Nov. 11. The Icemen are 1-10-0-1 away from home this season.
