Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Anthony Calabrese from the Worcester Railers. The second-year defenseman was traded for future considerations after logging time with Worcester, Allen, and Pensacola in the SPHL.
Calabrese, 25, played his last nine games in the ECHL after opening the season in the SPHL with the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The 5-foot-10 defenseman was off to a good start in Pensacola, netting four goals and adding 13 assists in 22 games. His early success resulted in a call-up to the Allen Americans on Jan. 4. Calabrese played eight games with the Americans before being acquired on waivers by the Worcester Railers on Feb. 3.
The Bridgetown, New Jersey produced an assist in 12 games with the Norfolk Admirals before his season was cut short. Calabrese suffered a serious season-ending injury in Duluth, Georgia while facing the Atlanta Gladiators.
Before turning pro in 2016, the blue-liner played four seasons at Plattsburgh State in New York. In 86 NCAA Division-III games from 2012 to 2016, Calabrese collected 47 points (7G, 40A). In 2015 Calabrese helped Plattsburgh to a SUNYAC title and earned a spot in the NCAA D-III National Tournament. Following his senior season with the Cardinals, he helped the Ice Flyers capture the 2016 Presidents Cup by leading all defensemen with six points (1G, 6A) in seven playoff games.
Calabrese and the Swamp Rabbits will take the ice at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena tomorrow night against the Atlanta Gladiators at 7 p.m.
