TOSTI: Caleb Herbert Heads to Utica on Call-Up

Leading scorer earns third promotion of the season to join playoff bound Comets.

Greenville, SC – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits announced today that forward Caleb Herbert has earned his third AHL call-up of the season and will join the Utica Comets. The Swamp Rabbits leading scorer has earned call-ups to the Hartford Wolf Pack and San Jose Barracuda this year.

Herbert, 26, inked a deal with the Swamp Rabbits this summer and has since played 38 games in the ECHL. After two separate promotions to the AHL, Herbert still posted over 50 points, becoming the fastest player in the league to achieve the mark in the 2017-18 season. The 52 points (24G, 28A) scored by the Bloomington, Minnesota native was capped off by earning five points (4G, 1A) in the final three games of the season.

The 6-foot forward was named ECHL Player of the Month in November after a phenomenal start to the season. At the time of his first call-up on Dec. 17, Herbert led the league in scoring, netting 35 points (16G, 19A) in 22 games. He began the season by breaking a team record, notching a point in each of his first 17 games of the campaign. In addition to his player of the month nomination, Herbert was named November’s Plus Performer of the Month and also earned recognition as Player of the Week in November.

Herbert has also seen action in 22 games with the Wolf Pack and Barracuda. In those games, he has produced two goals and added five assists for seven points. In his career, the University of Minnesota-Duluth alum has played in 102 games at the AHL level and earned 27 points (12G, 15A). The 2010 Washington Capitals draft pick has also earned 102 points (57G, 45A) in 108 games in the premier AA hockey league.

After playing three seasons at Minnesota-Duluth, Herbert left the program to join the Hershey Bears. The former Bulldog ended his tenure in the NCAA with 89 points (32G, 57A) in 112 games and led the school in scoring as a junior with 31 points (12G, 19A).
