Swamp Rabbits Weekly: Edition 16

Greenville takes six points against South Division opponents and prepares for a three-game week versus Manchester and Florida.

Sunken Ships and Tamed Bears

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (26-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, brought the brooms to a three-game party, sweeping through the Norfolk Admirals and Orlando Solar Bears. Mackenzie Skapski helped headline the wins making over 100 saves in three consecutive starts. Wednesday in Norfolk, Greenville earned two-goal nights from Michael Joly and Nick Betz in route to a 6-2 victory. The Swamp Rabbits scored a season-high five goals in the third period to overcome the 2-1 deficit they were facing at the start of the final period. Friday night’s 5-3 win over Orlando on the 4th annual Stick-It-To-Cancer Night presented by Bon Secours St. Francis Health System was highlighted by Bretton Cameron’s hat trick, helping him to score his team-leading 16th goal of the season. Thanks to the fans and partners, more than $13,000 will be donated to local cancer-related non-profit organizations! The intensity was high on Saturday night. Greenville prevailed 5-2 on the strength of another two-goal performance by Michael Joly. The rookie has scored 14 goals in 19 games. In total, 14 different skaters earned a point as the Swamp Rabbits captured sole possession of second place in the South Division. Continue reading

Swamp Rabbits captain catapults Greenville to a 5-3 win over Orlando on Stick-It-To-Cancer night

Greenville, SCThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (25-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, were in store for an emotional contest when the puck dropped for the 4th annual Stick-It-To-Cancer game presented by Bon Secours St. Francis Health Systems. The night turned into an overjoyed outing as Bretton Cameron netted his first hat trick in three years to propel the Swamp Rabbits to a 5-3 victory over the Orlando Solar Bears. The teams are now tied for second in the South Division standings and will face-off again tomorrow at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

The Swamp Rabbits captain began his night to remember with a first-period goal, halfway into the opening frame. The puck came around the net on a shot from Nick Betz that sailed wide and Cameron put the puck off the goaltender Ryan Massa and in from below the goal line. Betz has earned the first three points (2G, 1A) of his career in the last two games. Massa would suffer the loss after making 29 saves. Continue reading

Swamp Rabbits Sign Goaltender P.J. Musico

Greenville brings second-year goaltender back to the Upstate after brief stint with Fort Wayne

Greenville, SCThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (24-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, announced today that free agent goaltender P.J. Musico has been signed by the team. The second-year netminder began the season with the Swamp Rabbits and begins his third stint with the team since turning pro.

Musico was traded to the Fort Wayne Komets on December 29th after playing one game with the Swamp Rabbits this season. In his only game, the netminder made 35 saves in a 5-3 victory against the Wheeling Nailers on November 27th. He owned a 1-2-1-0 record, 3.46 goals against average, and .884 save percentage with the Komets in five appearances.

Musico began his professional career with the Swamp Rabbits last season and led the team with seven victories despite making just 13 appearances. Overall, he posted a 7-3-1 record with a 2.35 goals-against-average and .925 save percentage. He earned a victory in his pro debut against South Carolina on Oct. 23 and notched his first pro shutout on Nov. 25 with a 26-save effort at Norfolk. Continue reading

Swamp Rabbits Take Over, Score Five During Third Period

Biggest period of the season propels Greenville to 6-2 victory over Admirals, wrapping up six-game road trip

Norfolk, VAThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (24-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, ambushed the Norfolk Admirals tonight 6-2 at the Norfolk Scope, scoring five unanswered goals in the third period. Nick Betz and Michael Joly each recorded multi-goal games in the victory. The win earns Greenville third place in the South Division with 53 points. The Swamp Rabbits are now 2-0 in Norfolk this season and are 3-2-0-0 in five contests against the Admirals.

Patience was the key to the first goal of the game. Joly stepped into the offensive zone on the left side of the ice and walked across the slot absolutely untouched. Admirals goaltender Brandon Anderson went down to his knees to save a potential shot, but the Swamp Rabbits rookie just walked around him. The tap-in gave Greenville the 1-0 advantage at 12:26 of the first period. Continue reading

Greenville to play three South Division contests highlighted by Stick-It-To-Cancer and Scout Night games

Road Stretch Nearly Closed

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (23-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, played their fifth straight game on the road on Saturday night in Orlando, FL. The week began in the sunshine state against the Florida Everblades where Greenville earned an overtime point. Against the top-seeded Everblades, the Swamp Rabbits recorded four goals in the second period but eventually fell in overtime. Greenville’s four second period tallies took the team to a  +16 scoring differential during the middle frame. Only four other teams have a better differential in the second period. The team’s seven-game point streak was halted on Thursday when Orlando earned a 3-2 win in regulation. The Swamp Rabbits were 5-0-2-0 prior to that game. For the first time in 13 games this season, Greenville fell in regulation when outshooting its opponent. Saturday’s 6-3 loss featured 45 Swamp Rabbits shots on net versus 33 shots from Orlando. TOSTI: ALDERSON RETURNS FROM AHL TO RABBITS

Brandon Alderson Returns from AHL

Swamp Rabbits scoring threat re-joins the team ahead of three-game week against South Division opponents

Greenville, SCThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (23-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, announced today that forward Brandon Alderson has been returned to the Swamp Rabbits by the Syracuse Crunch. Alderson played eight games in the AHL for Syracuse while on loan. Additionally, the Swamp Rabbits have added Ryan de Melo from the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs (SPHL) as an emergency backup goaltender.

Alderson earned his second call-up of the season and sixth of his pro career on January 16th. At the time of his call-up, Alderson was tied for the team lead with 11 goals and ranked third on the team in scoring with 22 points (11G, 11A). The Oakville, ON native recorded a point in 11 straight games (8G, 10A) from November 13th to January 11th, a career best and the longest streak of the season for Greenville. His seven multi-point games are the second most on the team.

The fourth-year pro began his career in the AHL with the Adirondack Phantoms and has compiled 144 AHL games since his rookie season. In those contests, Alderson earned 32 points (17G, 15A). He made his ECHL debut on November 28th, 2014 with Reading against Greenville. Alderson has compiled 64 points (29G, 35A) in 96 ECHL games after earning an assist in his debut. Continue reading

Swamp Rabbits Dealt Loss In Solar Bears Rematch

Greenville falls in second straight game for the first time in a month as Orlando takes hold of second place in South Division

Orlando, FLThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (23-18-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, put forth a 45 shot effort against the Orlando Solar Bears (23-15-5-2), falling 6-3 during a wild finish at the Amway Center. The Swamp Rabbits fall to a tie for third place in the South Division with South Carolina while the Solar Bears take sole ownership of second place behind the Florida Everblades.

The Solar Bears used caught some puck luck in the first period to earn a 2-0 advantage. Ben Danford took a shot from the right point three minutes into the game that hit the post. The puck lay in the crease where Chase Witala batted in his fourth goal of the season. A little over three minutes later, Darik Angeli had the puck pinball off of his body and in. Chris Crane was awarded an assist on the play after it hit his body on Danford’s initial shot. Danford earned the number one star of the game with four assists in the game. Continue reading

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (23-16-4-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, return to action tonight against the Orlando Solar Bears (21-15-5-2) to open up a two-game set at the Amway Center. The Swamp Rabbits are 4-2-1-0 against Orlando this season and have won the last three games against the Solar Bears. After being on the wrong end of a 5-4 overtime finish last night, the Swamp Rabbits are 5-0-2-0 in the last seven games. Greenville’s stretch has propelled them to second place in the South Division with 51 points. The Solar Bears trail Greenville by two points and is tied with South Carolina for third in the division. Angelo Miceli has 38 points (7G, 31A) in 40 games to lead the Swamp Rabbits. On the opposite side of the ice, Denver Manderson has earned a team-leading 42 points (11G, 31A) in 39 games. RABBIT TALES

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (23-16-3-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, return to the sunshine state tonight, facing the South Division leading Florida Everblades (28-9-2-2) for the sixth time this season. The teams played their first five games during Greenville’s first ten contests. Greenville topped the Everblades 4-3 in a shootout at Germain Arena in the last meeting on November 18th. Greenville has rattled off three consecutive wins and has garnered a South Division standings point in each of the last six games (5-0-1-0). The streak has propelled the team to second in the division. Florida rides in after a pair of road games in North Charleston last weekend. The Everblades are 7-2-1-0 in the last ten games and led by Brendan O’Donnell’s 50 points (27G, 23A) in 39 games. Greenville’s 8-3 victory against Atlanta on Friday helped propel Swamp Rabbits’ leading scorer, Angelo Miceli, to 38 points (7G, 31A) in 39 games. Continue reading

Swamp Rabbits skate away from three game week with six points, pair of overtime wins, and season-high goal total

Movin’ On Up

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (23-16-3-1), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, earned a three-game sweep last week and improved on a streak that has seen the team garner standings points in six straight games while posting a 5-0-1-0 record during that span. With the six-point swing against their South Division opponents from North Charleston and Atlanta, Greenville climbed into second place in the division with fifty points. Against South Carolina, the Swamp Rabbits held the lead early in both the first and second periods. Bretton Cameron factored on both tallies, each on the power play, as Greenville owned the special teams battle. After tying goals from the Stingrays, Tommy Thompson would net the game-winning goal in overtime. The first of two games against Atlanta finished in a 3-2 overtime decision. Joe Houk earned two points in the game, scoring the game-tying goal in the third period and feeding Thompson for another game-winning goal in overtime. Friday was a different story for the Swamp Rabbits as they tallied a season-high eight goals on Atlanta. Seven players earned multi-point efforts. Angelo Miceli scored two goals and added two assists, the highest single game point total for Greenville this season. Jeff Malcolm earned wins in all three games, making 85 total saves.
