Greenville, SCThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (3-2-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, entertained nearly 6,000 fans at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena at this morning’s Education Day game against the Orlando Solar Bears. Sixty minutes was not enough to decide the game and in overtime, Paul Zanette gave Greenville a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Solar Bears (2-3-1-0). Greenville pulls ahead in the standings, now tied with Cincinnati for 3rd place in the South Division.

Students from over 30 different schools came to watch the Swamp Rabbits on the Sandlapper Securities Rink. In addition to the entertainment on the ice, the Swamp Rabbits also worked with Roper Mountain Science Center, Greenville Zoo, Bricks 4 Kidz, the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, Greenville County Soil and Water Conservation District, Imagine Upstate, Challenge Island, and Youth Aviators to bring a great learning experience to the Well. These local organizations took part in concourse activities for the elementary school students in the morning before the puck dropped.

A five-minute overtime period followed a tie game between the Solar Bears and Swamp Rabbits. After waiting for his linemates to change, Zanette caught a pass from Joe Houk and broke to the net. It was Zanette’s second goal of the season and propelled the team to consecutive wins in overtime. Greenville has won it’s last three games.

After a scoreless first period, Brandon Alderson connected on a slap shot to give the Swamp Rabbits the 1-0 lead. His third goal in three games put Greenville up when it rang off the crossbar and in. Spiro Goulakos earned his first assist of the season and Garrett Noonan tallied his third helper on the go-ahead goal.  Alderson’s leads the Swamp Rabbits with three goals.

Less than a minute later, Orlando answered to tie the game. Adam Brace recorded the Solar Bears only tally six seconds into an Orlando power play. Greenville killed off six other opportunities and are third best in the ECHL, killing off 90.5% of power plays this year. The Swamp Rabbits gained momentum on six power play chances, but scored both goals at even strength.

Brandon Halverson recorded his third straight win by making a career high 36 saves in over 64 minutes of work. The former ECHL Goaltender of the Week made some phenomenal saves and kept his team in the contest with 12 saves in the third. The Traverse City, MI native has a 1.70 goals against average, good for sixth in the ECHL this season.

At the opposite end of the ice, Orlando’s Ryan Massa made 44 saves during his first overtime loss of the season. The goaltender was frustrated by the Swamp Rabbits during the game and accrued four penalty minutes.

BY: Brian Tosti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits

Greenville, SCThe Greenville Swamp Rabbits (1-2-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, shut-out the Norfolk Admirals (0-3-0-0) 2-0 behind 27 saves by Brandon Halverson and a pair of early second period goals.

A tough-nosed second period helped the Swamp Rabbits to break the scoring. Spiro Goulakos fought his way to the front of the net to cause a cross-checking penalty and only 14 seconds later, Brandon Alderson rifled home the first power play tally of the season. Leading scorer Angelo Miceli put a pass across the crease for Alderson to fire home his first of the season. Miceli has extended his point streak to three games, with a goal and two assists, the longest in the ECHL. The Swamp Rabbits were 1-for-3 on the power play in the game.

Four minutes later, a crisp passing play gave Trevor Gerling his first goal of the year. Miceli started the play over the blue line, giving the pass across to Troy Donnay. The defenseman quickly moved it to Matt Johnson who shot one to Gerling’s stick for the redirected goal. All three players picked up their first points of the season.

After a couple close plays in front of the net, Tommy Thompson met up with Gabriel Verpaelst with two minutes left in the period.  Verpaelst and Thompson crashed into the Swamp Rabbit net and caused an altercation. The two recorded the first fight of the season as Thompson stuck up for his goaltender.

Halverson denied 27 shots in the game including a game-high 13 during the third period. The Swamp Rabbit’s defense denied Norfolk on five power play chances in the game. Despite the loss, Connor Knapp made 28 saves in his first start of the season.
