HOW “SWEEP” IT IS!

     VERSUS

GAME THREE

BY: Bruce Berlet (Special to Howlings)

The revamped Bridgeport Sound Tigers finally solved goalie Cam Talbot but couldn’t beat the Connecticut Whale on Sunday.

Pesky Justin DiBenedetto ended Talbot’s shutout streak at nearly 200 minutes late in the first period and the Sound Tigers rallied from three one-goal deficits, but Casey Wellman scored off a brilliant setup by Whale captain Wade Redden at 16:36 of the first overtime for a 4-3 victory and a three-game sweep of their best-of-five Eastern Conference quarterfinal at the XL Center in Hartford.

“I had kind of just hopped on the ice and saw Reds with the puck,” Wellman said. “I called for it, but I’m pretty sure he saw me. I was just really excited because I thought I was open. He made a great pass, and I just wanted to hit the net. Luckily, I was able to put it in.” Continue reading

TESSIER HONORED FOR CHARITABLE WORK

KELSEY TESSIER NAMED WHALE’S 2011-12 IOA/AMERICAN SPECIALTY MAN OF THE YEAR

The Connecticut Whale are proud to announce that Kelsey Tessier has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hartford community during the 2011-12 season.

Tessier has generously donated his time by visiting patients at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and has been instrumental in the Whale’s “Hockey in the Streets” program, an outreach effort towards inner-city children in the Hartford area. He has selflessly volunteered for public appearances and has also taken on the role of community ambassador, going well beyond what was required of him. Tessier has also served as a leader in organizing and inspiring his teammates to participate strongly in Whale community relations efforts. Continue reading

FAN-FARE: BUILDING A WINNING PROGRAM

The New York Rangers have clinched a playoff berth and have all but certainly clinched the top seed in the NHL’s Eastern Conference and have their eye on the President’s Trophy as well.

  • In South Carolina, the Rangers ECHL affiliate, The Greenville Road Warriors, also have championship thoughts in mind as they’ve clinched a ticket in pursuit of playoff excellence towards the Kelly Cup. Continue reading

WHALE LOSE GROUND TO SOUND TIGERS

 VERSUS

BY: Bruce Berlet

Sunday is proving quite agonizing for the Connecticut Whale.

For the second successive week, the Whale lost in the dying seconds of overtime, this time to the Providence Bruins, who are fighting desperately for one of the final Eastern Conference playoff spots.

The Whale twice rallied from one-goal deficits before 3,218 at the XL Center, but just when a shootout seemed imminent again, rookie Carter Camper scored his second goal of the game with 2.1 seconds left for a 3-2 victory.

(We return with our regular coverage starting tonight)

Brian RingBY: Brian Ring

Hartford, CT, March 30, 2012 – The Connecticut Whale were defeated by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 3-0, Friday night at the XL Center.  Penguins goaltender Scott Munroe blanked the Whale with a 32-save performance, the fourth-straight defeat for the Whale (0-3-1-0).

The Penguins would strike fast and furious in the first period, tallying three goals in a span of 2:12 to get the jump on the Whale for good.

HAWK’S VIEW – MOSES ARRIVES IN THE LAND WITH PROMISE

Bob CrawfordBY: Bob Crawford, Voice of the CT Whale

Among the three most recent additions to the Whale roster, two, forward Andrew Yogan and defenseman Peter Ceresnak, were both Ranger draft picks and had been on the organization’s radar screen for at least a year.  The other, winger Steve Moses, though, was somewhat of an unknown commodity when he joined the Whale last week.

Early reviews are quite positive, however, for Moses, a Leominster, MA native who suited up for his first two pro games this past Saturday against Providence and Sunday at Bridgeport, after finishing a four-year career at the University of New Hampshire.

WHALE WEEKLY: March 26 – April 1, 2012

Bob CrawfordBY: Bob Crawford, Voice of the CTWhale

The Whale only managed one point out of three games this past weekend, but maintained a two-point lead over Bridgeport for first place in the Northeast Division.  The Whale fell to Portland, 4-1, on Friday night at home, then dropped a 3-2 decision to the P-Bruins the following night in Hartford. Connecticut gathered one point in a 4-3 overtime road defeat to the Sound Tigers to close out the weekend Sunday.  Kris Newbury and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault led the Whale offense with a goal and two assists each on the weekend.

This week:

  • The Whale host three opponents in three days this weekend, starting with a date against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday night at the XL Center (7:00 PM faceoff). The next night, the Adirondack Phantoms come to town for their final Northeast Division clash of the season with the Whale (7:00), and the Whale close out the weekend’s action on Sunday with another tilt against the Providence Bruins.  That game faces off at a special time of 2:00 PM.

THAT DIDN’T TAKE LONG…YOGAN SIGNED

yoganAndrew Yogan signed a contract with the New York Rangers today and he’s more than just a little likely to start next season in Hartford with the Whale. Yogan had just signed an Amateur Try-Out contract last week after completing his season with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL.

While he is yet to score in his three games, he did manage to get himself ousted from yesterday’s battle with the Sound Tigers with a five minute boarding major and a game misconduct.

Yogan is a big boy. He’s 6’3 and 203 pounds and really wants to make it to the next level. If his effort on the ice in the limited run is any indication, that could possibly happen.

Here’s the release from the Rangers.

SPOTLIGHT: ZUCCARELO AND KREIDER

Bruce BerletBy: Bruce Berlet

Chris Kreider looks more and more like pro material when the postseason arrives.

Kreider, the New York Rangers’ first-round pick (19th overall) in 2009, scored both Boston College goals in a 2-0 victory over Air Force in the NCAA men’s hockey tournament Northeast Regional semifinals Saturday night at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.

“The kid who scored their two goals,” Air Force coach Frank Serratore said. “Where is he going to be in three weeks, New York?”
