ZUCCARELLO OFFICIALLY IS BACK

NEW YORK, March 28, 2013 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with free agent forward Mats Zuccarello.

Zuccarello, 25, registered 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points, along with 30 penalty minutes in 44 games with Magnitogorsk Metallurg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) this season. He tied for fifth on Metallurg in goals, and ranked sixth on the team in points and assists. Zuccarello also registered two goals and two assists in seven playoff contests with Metallurg. He tied for second on the team in goals, third in points, and fourth in assists during the postseason. Continue reading

Mats Zuccarello was scheduled to head back to North America on Tuesday night but don’t expect “The Norwegian Hobbit” to make another pit stop in Hartford with the Connecticut Whale.

The parent New York Rangers needed goals – desperately – so Zuccarello was to go directly from Norway to Ottawa to rejoin the Rangers and not pass any “go” signs along Asylum Street, where he was an AHL All-Star last season before finishing in the NHL with a fractured left wrist that kept him out of a run to within two wins of the Stanley Cup finals.  Continue reading

STAAL INJURED – HOW BAD NOBODY KNOWS – RANGERS CLAIM HAMRLIK

Last night at MSG, one time Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Marc Staal took an ugly deflected shot to the right eye. The 26-year old immediately fell to the ice in considerable pain and writhed around on the ice while being treated.

The Rangers have not yet released information about Staal’s condition, although that could be coming soon.

Right now the Rangers organization does not feel that they have an ready or adequate replacement in Hartford – and apparently they don’t have the full confidence in former Connecticut Whale d-man Matt Gilroy to entrust him with the job full-time. Therefore, the Rangers have claimed aging d-man Roman Hamrlik on waivers from the Washington Capitals. Continue reading

Team Opens 87th Season on January 19 at Boston;

Home Opener on January 20 against Pittsburgh

NEW YORK, January 12, 2013 – The New York Rangers will open the 2013 season with a back-to-back set beginning on Saturday, January 19, with an Original Six matchup at Boston. This will mark the fifth consecutive season the Rangers will open their regular season campaign on the road, and the 11th time in the last 13 seasons. The Rangers will complete the back-to-back set to begin the season with their home opener at MSG on Sunday, January 20, with an Atlantic Division matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Rangers will only face Eastern Conference opponents in a 48-game schedule that features 18 games against Atlantic Division opponents, and 15 games apiece against Northeast Division and Southeast Division opponents. New York will face Atlantic Division foes Pittsburgh and Philadelphia five times each, hosting the Penguins three times at MSG while playing the Flyers twice on home ice. The Blueshirts will also face New Jersey and the New York Islanders four times apiece. Continue reading

BERLET SPOTLIGHT: THURESSON GOES HOME

For the second day in a row, a Connecticut Whale player who was a restricted free agent has headed home to Europe and a third is going elsewhere.

Forward Andreas Thuresson signed a two-year contract with Brynas IF of the Swedish Elite League in his native land one day after defenseman Pavel Valentenko inked a two-year deal with Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League in his native Russia.  Continue reading
